ANOINTED IN CHRIST BY GOD

Acts 10:38 - How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with Him.

II Cor. 1:21 – Now he which has established us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, is God.

I John 2:27 – But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you, but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.

The purpose of the anointing:

1. Ex. 28:41 – Aaron and sons are anointed to Consecrate and Sanctify them to minister to the Lord.

a. Consecrate means to fill; be accomplished, to confirm. (Sets a person in an office or assigns to a specific task.)

b. Sanctify means to be, make, or pronounce, or observe as clean; appoint, dedicate. (Dictionary: to set apart as holy; to make free and cleanse from moral corruption and pollution.)

2. I Pet. 2:9 – We are God’s Kingdom of priests who are to give praise to God.

The properties of the Anointing Oil and what they represent to us as believers:

 Five ingredients: 4 spices – myrrh; cinnamon; cane or calamas; cassia; and Olive Oil as combiner

 Fragrance of Christ – II Cor. 2:15-17 – For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing. To the one we are the aroma of death leading to death, and to the other the aroma of life leading to life. And who is sufficient for these things? For we are not as so many, peddling the word of God; but as of sincerity, but as from God, we speak in the sight of God in Christ.

1. Olive Oil – oil represents the Holy Spirit; Gethsemane means “olive press”

a. Jesus learned, as we do, obedience through the things He suffered.

b. Olive tree grows slowly over a century; fruit of wild olive is useless unless grafted into mature cultivated tree. – John 15:1-5 – I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruits for without Me you can do nothing.

• Romans 11:16-20 – For if the firstfruit is holy, the lump is also holy; and if the root is holy, so are the branches. And if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive tree, were grated in among them, and with them became a partaker of the root and fatness of the olive tree, do not boast against the branches. But if you do boast, remember that you do not support the root, but the root supports you. You will say then, “Branches were broken off that I might be grafted in.” Well said. Because of unbelief they were broken off, and you stand by faith. Do not be haughty; but fear.

2. Myrrh – means ‘distilling in drops; bitter’ – represents suffering with endurance

a. Jn. 19:39 – used in burial of Jesus; helps prevent decay (Nicodemus brought it mixed w/aloes.)

b. We received implanted word distilled into our hearts line upon line, precept upon precept… (Is. 28:9-10; HS taught Jn. 14:25-26)

c. Sticky resin describes the anointing’s ability to cause us to ‘hold fast’ – Heb. 4:14-16 – our faith; and II Cor. 4:16-18 – we do not lose heart, but are renewed daily

d. Laudanum is made from this – relieves pain of suffering.

3. Cinnamon – represents the fragrance of Christ’s resurrection life (see II Cor. 2:15-16 above)

a. Scripture speaks of false christs; in Pro. 7 this spice is used by harlots to seduce.

b. Discernment for the true anointing is a must! – We discern Christ Jesus by KNOWING Him.

4. Calamus (Sweet Cane) – means a ‘reed or rod’ used for measuring.

a. Speaks of the measure of our inheritance (Heb. 10:35b knowing you have a better and an enduring possession for yourselves in heaven.)

b. Used most in Ezekiel where it is translated “reed” or “rod” for measuring the temple in Ezekiel’s vision. (Ezk. 40-48)

5. Cassia – similar in smell though stronger to cinnamon.

a. Speaks to us of surrender in suffering and crushing.

b. Means ‘peeled;’ root word means to contract or bend the body or neck; to shrivel.

c. Cinnamon sticks roll into a stick-form; Cassia rolls into a scroll-form (end towards end)

d. We are epistles read of men who watch our lives – II Cor. 3:2-3 You are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read by all men; clearly you are an epistle of Christ, ministered by us, written not with ink but by the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of flesh, that is, of the heart.

e. Cassia has antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral properties; used medicinally in ancient world.

f. Speaks of God’s healing abilities – laying hands on the sick so they will recover.

Summary –

Rereading again I John 2:27 – This anointing abides in you. The stays in a given place (your heart) to keep you in relation to Christ Jesus with an expectancy to carry on His work through His anointing and power that works in and through you, fully equipped to do our Father’s will.
